Mock interview
Practise a free AI mock interview, out loud and in private
An interviewer asks you real questions out loud, digs into your answers with follow-ups and tells you how it went. It all runs on your own computer, so you can practise as often as you like.
Why a mock interview beats reading questions
Reading a list of interview questions and thinking "I'd say something like..." feels like preparation, but it isn't the same as answering. In a real interview you have to speak in full sentences, with someone waiting, and keep going when a question catches you off guard. A mock interview is the closest you can get to that without a real interviewer.
Kayavak's mock interviewer gives you that pressure in a safe place. It asks each question out loud, waits for your answer and moves on, just like a real panel. Nobody else sees or hears it, and nothing is uploaded.
How the mock interview works
- Pick a question set. Choose one of the built-in sets, or your own questions for a specific job.
- Start a mock interview. The interviewer asks the first question out loud, in an on-device voice.
- Answer as you would on the day. Look at the camera, speak naturally and take your time. Kayavak times every answer.
- Handle the follow-ups. With the optional local AI model installed, the interviewer reads your answer and may ask one short follow-up: a specific example, your own role, the result, or what you'd do differently.
- Get your verdict and report. At the end, the local AI gives honest, kind feedback on the substance and structure of your answers. Your full report shows eye contact, posture, pace, filler words and answer length.
The interviewer's voice is left out of your measurements, so your report is only about you.
Questions for the job you actually want
Kayavak comes with question sets for many kinds of interview, including:
- Common interview questions
- Behavioural (STAR) questions
- Software engineer, product manager, and data analyst or data scientist roles
- Sales and business development
- Campus placements and freshers
- HR round
- Manager and leadership
- Customer support and service
For something closer to the real thing, use Questions for your job: paste the job description, and your CV if you like, and Kayavak builds the questions that interview is likely to ask. They're saved as one of your own question sets, ready for a mock interview, the record page or your practice plan. The pasted text stays on your computer.
What you get after each mock interview
Kayavak measures how you came across, not just what you said:
- Eye contact: how much of the time you looked at the camera, which stands in for your interviewer.
- Posture and gestures: slouching, crossed arms, hands near your face and how open your gestures are.
- Pace and pauses: words per minute for each answer, and stretches that rush or drag.
- Filler words and hedges: every "um", "like" and "I think maybe", highlighted in your transcript.
- Answer length: answers too short to show depth, or long enough to lose the room.
You replay the session as an avatar, never your face, and jump straight to the moments worth fixing. Then Retake your weakest answer and compare it side by side with your first try, measure by measure.
The follow-up is where practice pays off
Most people can get through a prepared answer. The follow-up question is where answers fall apart: "What was your part in that?" or "What was the result?" A mock interview that asks follow-ups shows you whether your story really holds up.
If your answers tend to skip the ending, our guide to the STAR method gives you a simple shape for behavioural questions. And since almost every interview opens the same way, it's worth rehearsing your answer to tell me about yourself until it feels natural.
Private, free and offline
The AI interviewer runs on your own computer through a local model, so your answers are never sent to an online AI service. Each answer is transcribed on your computer and its audio is thrown away straight after. Video frames are turned into movement points and discarded; only those points, your transcript and your report are saved, on your computer. There's no account, and after the first launch it works offline. Read the privacy policy for the details.
Questions
Is the AI mock interview really free?
Yes. Every feature in Kayavak is free, with no paid tier, no ads and no limit on how many mock interviews you do.
Do I need the AI model for a mock interview?
No. Without it, the interviewer still asks the questions out loud and you get your full report on body language, voice and words. The local AI model adds the follow-up questions and the verdict at the end. The FAQ explains how to set it up in one click.
Can I practise a phone interview?
Yes. Choose Voice only and no camera is opened. You get everything about your words and voice, without the body-language measures.
How is this different from interview practice mode?
In interview practice you read each question and press Next when you're ready. The mock interview asks the questions out loud and can follow up, so it feels more like the real thing. Many people use both.
